Cloudwatch

Notes

  • a service watching activities on cloud like
  • watchman for AWS cloud
  • most of the service like EC2 creation, s3 put object, etc. can be logged on cloudwatch
  • helps you monitoring, alerting, reporting and logging

Benefits

  • plays critical role in infrastructure monitoring but still plays important role in application monitoring
  • allow you to get real life metrics (default or custom) eg: apireq/sec, cpu utilization in last 30 min, etc.
  • set alarms (to sent notification) when metrics threshold exceed
  • logging of the activities happening on particular service like: Lambda logs, or EC2 access log, etc.
  • you can enhance cloudwatch by providing custom metrics of services or even applications
  • helps in cost optimization (because cloudwatch knows everything, you can check those metrics on what’s happening, who is performing what and then you can take action if something unappropriate related cost is happening)
  • helps in scaling (the same reason as above, through metrics you can know how services are performing for eg: if EC2 is going 80% CPU 90% of time means you might need to scale, etc.)

Tip

Sending and viewing metrics is not useful much. You, as a DevOps engineer should act on that information -> set alarms, send notifications, etc.
